Chief Municipal Inspector David Wolf has recently written to the Minister for Local Government, Hon Adem Somyurek, raising concerns about the activities and actions of Whittlesea City Council councillors and their ability to provide leadership and good governance for the community.

The Inspectorate has received specific complaints related to behaviour of councillors and other matters over a number of months.

Mr Wolf said: “Many of the issues raised are conduct or behavioural related but there are matters currently under investigation by my office.”

“For this reason I have recommend to the Minister the appointment of a Monitor, pursuant to section 223CA of the Local Government Act 1989, to ensure good governance around processes and statutory decision making. A Monitor will also provide any advice to the Minister should behaviours further deteriorate to the detriment of the community.”

The Inspectorate is currently investigating a number of matters related to the council but cannot provide comment on specific complaints or matters under investigation.

Details will be made public when the investigation is concluded.
