Our role is to ensure council’s governance and operating procedures are compliant with the Act and to avoid breaches of the Act.
Governance is the system which controls and operates a council and how its people are held to account.
Good governance gives the community confidence that decisions are being made by their council in a transparent and accountable way, and in the community’s best interests.
We:
- encourage better governance in councils
- review councils’ governance procedures.
Sometimes we do governance examinations on one specific council. We can also do governance examinations across a number of councils looking at a particular topic.
We identify what we will examine during council visits, through our investigations or after receiving information from councils or the public.
Some of our recent governance examinations include:
- a review of council policies and documents required by the Act
- a review of personal interest declarations by councillors
- a review of councillor expenses and allowances
- CEO employment
